This really shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody who closely follows the World Poker Tour; JC Tran is the chipleader after Day 1a of the WPT North American Poker Championship. Tran was one of 125 players to plunk down the $10,300 CDN for the first of three starting days at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Ontario. At the end of the day’s five levels of play only 79 players remained, but none were more impressive than Tran, who finished with 159,300 chips. Almost 32,000 behind Tran is John Mori with 127,600.
With most top players just getting over the jetlag from returning from London the first day was lacking most of the usual star power typical of a WPT event. Still, Tran was joined by Erik Seidel, Nenad Medic, Isaac "WestmenloAA" Baron and Roy Winston as some of the more recognizable players in the field. With two more starting days on the slate expect more big names
The final player eliminated on Friday was Annette Obrestad. The first World Series of Poker-Europe Main Event champion was knocked out by Winston as other players were bagging their chips. Joining Obrestad on the rail were Medic, Chad Brown, Shaun Deeb and Kofi Farkye who made the final table last year.
Day 1b action will begin at Noon ET and will play the exact same five levels.
