When Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel and Casino announced they would be hosting a $2,000 buy-in deep stack poker tournament with a guaranteed $500,000 prize pool it turned some heads. The guarantee would be the largest in the history of Atlantic City.
After running numerous satellites over the past few months the Borgata looked to be on target for making the guarantee. But what happened on Day 1 of the tournament Sunday went well beyond expectations. A total of 775 players entered the tournament with numerous other players being turned away as the tournament was sold out.
The final prize pool was $1,550,000 with $395,095 going to first place. The 775 players that started the tournament played down to 323 at the end of the first day. Those players spent Monday playing down to the 21 players who started the day Tuesday in pursuit of the nearly $400,000 first place money.
The final four players, Schuyler Twaddle, Weiwen Liang, Alan "BodogAri" Engel and Mark Reynolds, chopped the remaining prize money shortly after the dinner break Tuesday. Twaddle had the largest chip stack at the time of the chop and took home the largest piece of the chopped prize pool.
