Taking over the airways
You will not be getting poker strategy this issue from Phil Laak. Just a day in the life sort of thing.
Recently I had the crazy opportunity to be a guest on a radio show called The Loveline Show, hosted by Stryker and Dr. Drew. I used to watch this show when I was on MTV (with Adam Corolla) and was stunned when I realized that I was going to be a guest. What a blast this was going to be!
Anyway, it happened on September 19th, and about three days later I got an email from an old friend. We chat a few times a year, but I hadn’t had the opportunity to let him know to tune in his radio. My buddy and I hung out a lot back in the day, and if you knew me then you would say I hadn’t changed much.
I just laughed so hard when I read his email that I thought I would share it with you. This is my buddy Robert’s email to me a few days after the show aired…

“Go ahead, Jessica, you’re on the air.” “Hi, yeah, I’m 18 and I have a problem…
I just can’t seem to get enough sex. I think about it all the time and it controls my life. Is this a problem? I was hoping to get some advice.”
(Incredulous laughter) "This is not a problem, everyone’s different, like some cats are polydactyl… I think I could help you with this.”
So I’m driving away from my basketball game at about 10:30 last night when the radio station I was tuned in to went to commercial. So I hit the change station button and immediately heard a recognizable laugh coming from my speakers. Other voices cut in that I do not recognize. Then a voice that sounds familiar comes on again.
“What the heck is this?” I ask myself. “Where do I know that voice from?” After a brief time I realize this is Loveline, a sex advice show (didn’t know it still existed) and my brain conjures up the idea that must have been Mr. Phil Laak’s voice. But reason came over me — even in the cruel capitalistic society we live in; no marketing would allow Phil to give sex advice to young impressionable listeners. Then my reason was crushed. Indeed, for the 25-minute ride home, I listened to Phil and Antonio engage in conversation about people’s (read: young girls’) sexual problems/fears/curiosities, while at the same time promoting marijuana to the extent that I thought they might be getting paid by the CMGA (California Marijuana Growers Association). What a society we live in. Very entertaining.

There was no edit button in the booth and we sort of drifted about a lot. I think we ended up talking about pot somewhat, and I think I seemed like I was liberal with my thinking here. I actually tried to give answers the best that I could and in the end, for sure, the show was entertaining.
Regarding Robert’s line...
“Reason came over me — even in the cruel capitalistic society we live in no marketing would allow Phil to give sex advice to young impressionable listeners.”
I just saw how funny it is the way things work. Here I am, basically a decently smart degenerate gambler — not the best the market has — but a profitable one, and here I am trying to get good answers out to kids with sometimes tough sex questions. Pretty funny. And a bit nonsensical.
In the end, we encouraged the kids to step back and think about the cause and effect of their situations (well, not all the time), give the obvious answers where they were due and to try and have a sense of humor about it all the while.
Yet another landscape in life that mirrors the poker universe. Sex!
How funny that good guidance in the arena of sex is similar to guidance for poker. Good advice in both is all about looking at the causes and effects of what you are doing, making the obvious plays (not getting caught up in fancy play syndrome) and having a good laugh along the way.
If you have time to read this article, then you might have time to listen to the interview as well. I have to warn you that it is over an hour long, but I will also promise you a good laugh or two. Check it out if you want. To do so, go to lovelineshow.com, and click around ‘til you have found the archives. It all happened on Sept 19th.
And remember... Responsible Gambling!!
