Rounding out 2006

So 2007 has officially kicked in and I am glad to say that things are off to a great start. I was fortunate to be Down Under for New Year’s, helping with the production of the 2007 Aussie Millions. It was great to get back to the town where I grew up and to visit friends and family I hadn’t seen in over a year.

But the highlight of the trip was watching a young kid by the name of Jimmy Fricke. Hailing from the US, he’s not even old enough to play in Las Vegas yet since he’s under 21. He can, however, play outside of the US in places like Australia where the legal age for gaming is 18. Now, when I say this kid can play, I mean this kid can really play. He made the final table of the Main Event and ran over every player there. He then got heads up with world class player Gus Hansen but was unlucky that Gus got hit with the deck. Gus ended up taking out Jimmy and winning the event, but I will never forget some of the plays this kid made.

Looking back on 2006, I have many great memories. One of the highlights was meeting the writers of the cult classic movie Rounders on the set of the yet-to-be released film Oceans 13. Brian Koppelman and David Levien not only wrote Rounders, but they were also the brains behind the hit TV series TILT. During the filming in LA, I was introduced to the writers by the prop master Robin Miller. When Brian found out that I was the gaming consultant and all-round poker guru, he told me that he wrote Rounders. Well, after approximately 4.3 minutes, we had a fresh deck of cards out and were playing heads up on the set for $100 a game. I soon discovered that Brian was an absolute poker degenerate, just like me. From then on, the set featured heads-up matches every day, with Brian getting the better of me in the end to the tune of about $600.

On the days that I was not on set, my business partner Kyle Morris was overseeing everything. Along with his gaming expertise, Kyle was able to pass on some of his poker know-how to Brian, and managed to fleece him for an undisclosed amount of money. Let’s just say that Brian was very eager to play me on the days I was on set because he felt he could get back some of the money that Kyle had robbed from him the previous day.

In addition to enjoying some very memorable heads-up matches with Brian, I was glad to meet one of my favorite actors, Ed Norton. Although Ed was not in Oceans 13, he did drop in to say hi to Brian and David. Fellow Bluff columnist Phil Laak also stopped by, and I am happy to report that he was unable to employ his Unabomber skills on the great Hux and I managed to take him down to funky town in a four-way freezeout between Brian, David, him, and me. David ended up beating me in that match since he is a total luck box, but, once again, I had a blast.

Overall, 2006 was a great year for me. I managed to completely move away from dealing poker to concentrate on the company that I formed with my mate Kyle Morris. The company is called TV Poker, LLC and we consult on television and movie projects, ensuring authenticity in anything gaming related. And 2007 is off to a great start, as we are currently working on a new movie based on the hit book Bringing Down The House. The movie is yet to be titled, so I will wait until my next article to tell you more about it.

Until next time, may the flop be with you…always.
