Poker Nicknames

Guidelines for finding the right nickname

Traditionally, nicknames aren't chosen, but conferred by one's poker peers. However, those of you who are deeply unpopular will need to resort to drastic measures. Here's a short guide to finding the right nickname:

A: Former occupations can make great poker nicknames but you have to use good judgement. Will usually only work if it is short and sweet.

Works: Antonio ‘The Magician’ Esfandiari
Try Again: Brian ‘The Associate Director of Internet Technology’ Martinez
B: Religious References can be used as long as they are kept in good taste.

Works: Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson
Try Again: David ‘Saint Mother Theresa of Calcutta’ Carlisle
C: Aquatic names can make great nicknames, assuming they somehow describe your style.

Works: David ‘Devilfish’ Ulliot
Try Again: Kevin ‘The Manatee’ Mitchell
D: Former criminals could be used to make a great nickname, but once again these
need to be in good taste.

Works: Phil ‘The Unabomber’ Laak
Try Again: Justin ‘Eric Rudolph’ Wykowski

REAL NAME- ANTONIO ESFANDIARI
NICKNAME- THE MAGICIAN

A former magician turned poker pro, Antonio burst into mainstream poker after the WPT aired the Gold Rush during their first season. It seemed as if, by some strange magic, Antonio could actually see world champion Phil Helmuths cards. One trademark “Wave” after busting Phil out of the tournament, and Antonio became one of the biggest fan favorites in the game.

REAL NAME- CHRIS FERGUSON
NICKNAME- JESUS

Tall and skinny with long brown hair, the Jesus nickname was an obvious conclusion. At most tables, all attention is drawn to him, just like his namesake in Da Vinci’s painting of “The Last Supper.”

REAL NAME- DAVID ULLIOT
NICKNAME- DEVILFISH

Don’t think a fish can be scary? You clearly have never encountered a devilfish. At the poker tables, David “Devilfish” Ulliot can also be quite frightening. His freewheeling and aggressive style makes him very hard to read, and if you aren’t prepared for super aggressive play, he will devour you. In fact, his nickname is fashioned after a fish that if not “prepared” correctly, can be deadly when eaten.

REAL NAME- PHIL LAAK
NICKNAME- THE UNABOMBER

Aside from dressing the part of an FBI sketch of Ted Kaczynski, who terrorized the US for nearly 30 years, Phil Laak’s Unabomber resemblances are few and far between (Phil hasn’t sent a letter bomb
in months). He uses his highly popular hooded sweatshirt, along with dark sunglasses, to keep from giving off any tells.

Massive Malts and Barley Sandwiches.

The poker world is riddled with nicknames. While most players earned their nicknames for one reason or another, now you can have one given to you for free from pokernickname.com. Type in your name, answer a few stupid questions, and you could be the next Bob “Gangly AleBoy” Stankowski or Dierdra “The Black Death” Jones. Quite possibly the best feature is the ability to generate a new nickname if your first one doesn’t quite fit. If you don’t feel like being known as Diane “Cash Machine” Mitchell, you could use “two ton” or “seethru sheik.” Visit pokernickname.com and within a few minutes, you will have a brand new moniker to use on your quest to poker superstardom.
