I had a very interesting experience the other day. I was in LA filming Episodes 11 and 12 of I BET YOU (Phil Laak’s and my prop-betting TV show on MOJO). We always get a couple of days off in between, and so I had a little downtime in LA, which I don’t mind; there are some fantastic restaurants in this town. (Speaking of which; if and when you get here, check out an Italian restaurant called Mozza. FANTASTIC!) I have a lot of good friends to visit as well. And just in case I want to play some cards, there is the Commerce Casino, which is undeniably the best cardroom in the world!! All in all, not a bad place to have some time off.
Just so happened the American Music Awards were in town during my couple of days off. You couldn’t pay me to go to an awards show… I simply do not have the patience for those things…
However, you can get me to the gifting suites! For those of you who don’t know what that is (and trust me, I didn’t until just a couple of years ago), it’s a place where certain companies set up booths and give away their products for free to celebs to get their brand out there. We all know that whatever the celebrities wear and do, people tend to follow. HOW in the world I snuck my way into this lineup (for free stuff) is beyond me. In no way do I consider myself a celebrity!
There were about 30 different stops and each gift ranged from 50 to 500 bucks. All for free!!! And I do have to admit I LOVE free stuff. The best part was that when you checked in you got your own personal host and this guy would walk around with you with this ENORMOUS bag and introduce you to all the vendors and carry your things for you the whole time. It was a very unique experience.
I had been to a few gifting suites before, but nothing quite on this level (as far as quality of gifts). Perfect timing with Christmas right around the corner… yes, I will be guilty of RE-gifting! And I owe it all to my buddy Dan Fleyshman (head of Who’s Your Daddy energy drink). Who’s Your Daddy was the official energy drink of the American Music Awards celebrity gift lounge. The event was organized by GBK Events. They are huge when it comes to these types of events. Check them out at www.gbkevents.com.
It’s funny; I like LA and the many, many unique things it has to offer, but I could NEVER ever live here. It astonishes me how people sit through the traffic. I literally spent at least two hours a day EVERY DAY in the car. There are soooo many freakin’ people around. Everywhere you want to go is at least thirty minutes… the smog… the snobbiness of the girls. Great place to visit. Not the best place to live. (Just a matter of opinion. Sorry, all you LA lovers!)
