Cash for College
Paying for college tuition sucks. The superstar quarterback can’t do long division but he’s got a scholarship. The flute impresario who has the social skills of, well, a band geek, gets to enjoy the easy life with her scholarship. So what about poker players? Where’s the free ride for you?
It’s right here. Absolute Poker, for the second time, is launching the Absolute Poker College Challenge which could give you $10,000 for tuition. Or to rock out your dorm room with your own high-end beer pong set-up. Seriously though, maybe think about putting it towards your education. Or maybe you’ll just buy pizza for your whole fraternity.
“We’ve had such a tremendous response to this tournament in the past, and we believe that this program is one of the best ways to create real added value for college students,” says Absolute Poker Pro Matt Vengrin.
Either way, if you’ve got skills at the table then you’ve got a chance at winning that cash. Starting October 4th there will be three tournaments on AbsolutePoker. com each day that could put you on your way. There’s a freeroll with no buy-in, a $0.25 buyin, and a $5 buy-in. Finish in the top nine of any of those events and you’ve moved on to the freeroll the next day. Finish in the top nine in that freeroll and you’ve qualified for the weekly Sunday APCC Main Event qualifier at 9:45pm ET. That tournament has a $200 prize pool and will send the top fifteen finishers on to the Main Event on November 30.
The Main Event will be played six-handed and if you make the final table (top six) you’ll then qualify for the live final table and get $2,000 for travel expenses. The top prize for the final table is $10,000 with sixth place walking away with $1,500. For tuition and maybe some school supplies (pizza, beer, Zig-Zags).
Last year’s winner, Joseph “_DOUGH_ N8ER_” Castanier from Northwood University in Saginaw, MI, walked away with $10,000 after a performance he ranks as his best yet.
“I only started playing Texas Hold’em a few years back, and online about two and a half years ago. Dollars and cents, this is by far my biggest success so far in poker. I have had some pretty good weeks in the past, but nothing that measures up to the Absolute Poker College Challenge Main Event.”
That extra cake went a long way to paying his tuition and school costs and we’re pretty sure he bought some pizza for the friends that cheered him on to victory.
“I have been focusing on my studies as I return to school next month and graduate with a BBA in Accounting in February 2010. With the prize I was able to pay off my interest-bearing student loans and put the rest toward this term’s tuition,” says Castanier, who continues to play poker regularly at Absolute.
The Absolute Poker College Challenge is open to any college student and you’ll need to provide your student ID to claim any prizes.
