Bluff Chats with Jennicide

by Bluff Staff

November 2006

Jennicide, what’s been happening? We heard you were “going live.”

I wouldn’t say I’m making a full transition to live play, because I still play a lot of online poker – mainly to curb the variance of playing all of these 10k buy-ins, which can add up pretty quickly. So basically, when I’m not on the road, I’m playing cash games online, which helps a lot.

What is the biggest difference that you see between live and online events?

The biggest difference for me is the speed of the game. Online, you are seeing twice as many hands. A tournament with five thousand players is over in eight hours, whereas a live tournament of that magnitude would take weeks. The biggest thing that I have to work on is my patience. I can’t just sit there and multi-table. I tried, but the floorman at the casino wouldn’t let me (laughs).

What do you to remain patient? Do you have any tricks that help curb your appetite for action?

(Laughs) I count. I count the chips in the pot. I count how many chips everyone has at the table. It really helps me focus, and strangely enough, I kind of become table captain. I find myself correcting the dealer or other players who are counting chips. It’s actually kind of fun. I guess I really like counting (laughs).

Your article this month is all about “click tells.” Since you’ve been focusing so much at the table, can you tell us a bit about some live tells? What has your radar been picking up?

The focus – and counting – at the table has definitely helped me pick up a lot on my opponents. I’ve started to get a lot better at picking up betting patterns and lots of small things that are helping me get good reads on people. I actually sit and try to look totally uninterested in the game. I’ll be focusing on my iPod or something, but in my peripherals, I’m actually catching everything that is going on. When people know you’re observing them, it can alter the way they act. But if they don’t know you’re looking, you can pick up a lot of good things. It helped me a lot at the Legends of Poker. I was able to pick up some really good reads and bet people off hands when I knew they were weak, or get away from my big hands when I could tell someone hit a flop pretty hard.

What about the quality of play? Are opponents tougher live or online?

Well, a lot of that has to do with buy-in levels. The smaller buy-in live events are totally different than the 10k buy-ins. The 10k buy-in fields are ridiculous. You normally have three or four names at your table that are accomplished tournament professionals. Don’t get me wrong, though; there are a lot of online players who are very, very good, but I would have to say that these 10k live fields are much more difficult than online tournament fields.

What are your goals and expectations for tournament poker circuit?

My expectations? Well, I would have to say that I’m a pretty confident girl. By the end of 2007, I want to have a WPT title and two bracelets at next year’s WSOP. I feel that, since I ran so bad this past year, I must be due. It’s funny, because in my mind, it’s not a whole lot that I’m asking for. I was thinking about doing what I used to do when I was a little girl, stamp my foot and whine and pout, but I have a feeling that won’t do the trick, and I’ll just have to accomplish things with a lot of hard work.
