Introducing the nosiest little bird in Sin City. Here’s all the best babble
from the poker world. Just keep it to yourselves.
SUPERHEROES at the WSOP
In last month’s issue we announced Gavin Smith’s
“Who’s the best Canadian Poker Player?” challenge to
Daniel Negreanu. Soon after, the two mutually agreed
that this probably wasn’t the best way to show their bravado.
However, Bird hears that Gavin was recently “having
drinks” with Joe Sebok in the Bahamas, and the two
players formed a serious wager to be held at this year’s
WSOP. Gavin and Joe will tally their total points in
Limit, Pot Limit, and No Limit Hold’em events, beginning
6/27 and concluding 7/25; and the winner
will be crowned champion, or more importantly,
“just not the loser.” What’s on the line? No money,
just their dignity. For the first day of Main Event
’06, the losing player will be forced to dress up
as anything that the winning player comes up
with. You read that correctly. Anything! And
for all subsequent days the loser remains in the
Main Event, he will have to dress in any superhero
costume that the winner chooses. If, however,
he makes it to the last three days of the Main Event, he
won’t have to wear the costumes, because, of course,
there are marketing deals to be made. Wonder twin
powers – ACTIVATE!
HOT HUNKS OF THE POKERSTARS.COM EPT
Having been to both the
London Masters and the
French Open recently,
there are a few Eurostars
that have caught my eye.
There are three young
bloods to note and keep
your eyes on in the future.
Bengt Sonnert is a Swedish
player who’s been on a tear
in the last few months, having
finished fourth at the
Monte Carlo Millions, and
eighth at the Five Diamond
Poker Classic in Las Vegas.
Noah Boeken, a prodigy of
Marcel Luske and member
of The Circle of Outlaws, is
a young Dutch sensation,
and already has a
European Poker Tour win to
his credit. He’s considered
one of the best online players
out there. Fellow
Outlaw Patrick Antonius
hails from Finland and has
the look of a champ.
Patrick won a European
Poker Tour event, and finished
second in the Five-
Diamond Poker Classic,
picking up over one million
for five days work.
BORN to be WILD
Do you ever sit back in your
chair, rub your aching spine,
and think, “Man, I love poker,
but wouldn’t it be great to do it somewhere
else?” Well, Brian Easterling
and Leigh Wetzel are living the dream.
They bought an empty Airstream trailer,
revamped it, added a satellite dish
for internet access, and are now touring
the U.S., playing both live and
online poker. The couple, and faithful
hound Curtis, have visited 20 different
states, with some of their favorite
poker stops being Foxwoods, CN,
Cadillac Jacks in South Dakota, and
Cities of Gold, NM, where Brian and
Leigh took first and second place,
respectively, in a local tournament.
They figure Brian’s been in the money
50% of the time in his road tournaments.
Leigh, who knits as she plays,
is pretty hot herself. She took first in
the 2006 Hard Rock Tampa Ladies No
Limit Hold’em Tournament. This king
and queen of the road are headed to
Sin City for the month of April, next.
The Flying Cloud, which is the name of
their famed ‘63 Airstream, is, we think
you’ll find, quite photogenic. You can
follow their pictorial travelogue on
www.63flyingcloud.com.
WSOP New Tourney Director
Harrah’s has named a
new tournament director
team for the 2006
World Series of Poker.
Robert Daily, the poker
room manager at the
Rio All-Suites Hotel
and Casino in Las
Vegas will wield the
microphone this year.
Bob has a 30-year
career in the casino
gaming industry, and
will be joined by
Michael Matts, poker
room manager for the
new Caesars Palace
Las Vegas Poker
Room, where the final
table will be held.
IS YOUR SOULMATE ON PARTY POKER?
Who needs Match.com or eHarmony when you have
Party Poker? The online poker room has proudly
announced the coming together in Holy Matrimony of two
of their gamers. “I_like_birds,” also known as Gary Suffir, a
28-year-old New York attorney when he’s offline, met
“Supplanter,” a 27-year-old Las Vegas artist named Jackie
Johnson, while playing Omaha.
“We were both playing in a $30 Omaha game and I was
very much a beginner to this version of the game,” said the
blushing bride. “Gary made what I considered to be a good
play, but got nailed by a bad beat on the river. The guy who
won the hand started trashing Gary. I supported him in the
ensuing argument and the rest, as they say, is history.”
The two developed their relationship on IM and didn’t
even talk on the phone until the day before they met in
Vegas, January 2005. They returned to Vegas in March
2006 for a poker-infused wedding, having spread an online
tourney for the wedding guests a few weeks prior. Guess
where their honeymoon is going to be? The PartyPoker.com
Million V Cruise, of course!
POKER ON MYSPACE.COM
If you spend a lot of time online, you’ve surely heard of the social networking group
that is expanding round the clock. For those of you who haven’t, it’s a place where
people can meet people, chat on forums, make friends, and find dates. And there’s
a whole world of poker enthusiasts on there with a whole lot to talk about. Some of
the groups you can join are Poker 101, No Limit Poker Playaz, and Poker Addicts.
Lots of professionals have gotten on the MySpace train as well, such as Howard
Lederer, Men “the Master,” Phil Hellmuth, Sam Farha, Phil Gordon, Marcel Luske,
and Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi. Most of them don’t blog, but Phil Gordon
describes, amongst other things, his wild nights out with Phil Hellmuth and Kristy
Gazes. Check out Scotty Nguyen’s recent post about his victory in Tunica, too.
