Special OPS Poker,
First I would like to welcome Bob Jarman to the Screaming Eagle Poker Family and this SEP Poker Forum on Bluff. I met him at a Poker Tournament in Vegas and we hit it off instantly! I know he has a lot to offer our SEP members... So lets give him a warm SEP welcome!!!
![]() His BIO as follows:
Bob Jarman is a Special Forces Combat Veteran with over twenty-one years of service in the US Army. Some of Bob's specialized training in the military was on how to tell if a person is being truthful or deceptive. Bob has put together an informative class on reading the tells people give off at the poker table. Much of Bob's Tells class is information well known and long since proven to work by Investigators and Interrogators from Law Enforcement and the Military. Yet it is still unknown to most people in the poker world until now. With the help of a few poker pros such as famed poker pro T.J. Cloutier, Bobs Tells class is quickly becoming world famous! He has given his class to several poker pros including 1983 world champion Tom McEvoy. In return for his tells training, Bob has received instruction from some of the best poker seminars and poker pros in the world. His name on this Forum is pokeropsBob and you can view his columns at http://www.screamingeaglepoker.com/bob-jarman-letter.htm We will use this forum to discuss the topics of Special Ops Poker and Bob has agreed to reply back to any questions. Take care and let the discussions begin.....(anyone feel free to post your comments)
1st discussion: Bob by telling people that you are in the Military and a being an battle tested combat vet gives you a slight advantage at the tables (would you agree?). Not only does it get people comfortable to open up to you (talking/gathering info...combat patrol). Whether its thanking you for your service or just sharing their military experience! I know that some people tend to respect or even fear you because they know that you are trained KILLER!
Sitting at the Poker table I scan my sector (firing range) looking for the easy 50 meters targets to take down....(building my chipstack from the weaker players). You mention to me that getting people to talk (casual talk) between hands, you can get free information on how they act when the are comfortable.... Then when you get in a hand with them you can ask them questions and see how the respond under stress.... This has help me out and I have been able to drag in a few more pots because of this tip! Thanks again and looking forward to your next column.....
One question how do you combat playing females who use their charm at the tables? I have seen the 1st Lady of SEP use this Powerful tactic at the tables in TUNICA! Talk about bringing out the weapons of MASS destruction...

Pokerops Bob here,
Hey Felix! Tom McEvoy once told me I'm aware of how people perceive me at the poker table and this can be used to my advantage and Tom is 100% correct. I even try to perpetuate my table image. I ride a Harley and I will wear biker clothing while playing. I use a 5th Special Forces group coin as my chip protector and people often ask me about it and then I can talk about my military past. People do respect this and it gets them thinking. This alone would not intimidate people far as getting in a hand and mixing it up with me. But, when I get into a hand I'm aggressive and if people limp in they start to dread it when I get into the pot because they know i'm gonna be pushing hard. I see the dread in their face at times and many later tell me so. If I get to the table early I'll try to talk to people and pick up anything I can. If I'm late I'm usually quiet for awhile observing and I tend to look real serious and later I open up and start talking friendly and some people open up and see I'm a freindly guy and then they tend to talk lot. How I act at the table is dependent on the people at the table, how I play alot of the time is dependent on the people and what happens at the table. Don't forget to mix it up too, because people will pick up on things if you are for instance always raising when coming into the pot. I think it is a good strategy for a woman to use her "ATTRBUTES" at the table because it will take some players out of their game. As for me, I'll let them think it is taking me out of my game, I'll play into them, I'll observe them, but not in the way they think I am. One must remain disciplined and not get distracted. Focus on the moment and stay focused unil the game is over....mindset!!! Take care and we'll talk soon! |

Lol, I sure do love using my "charm" at the tables against guys. Thanks Felix for putting it such a nice way. I still can't believe you were able to convince those guys to start throwing "chips to my chest!" LOL. But at the same time, you've seen me play the fierce roll where I played in the ladies tournament against 465 women. Just like Bob says he does, I didn't speak a word, wearing your Army hat and my glasses to have more of an intimidating look. It actually did work for me quite a few times. Then I got a few of the women to talk to me and some did even thank me for my service and just coming back from the deployment. I would love to learn a little more from you Bob to see what I might be able to pick up. I know for the most part, I've been able to pull quite a few guys off their game when all I have to do sometimes is just smile the right way. It's very interesting . . . time for me to take some more psychology classes!

You are on the right track...know how people perceive you at the table and know when that perception changes. Perception can change when you open up and they see you are friendly, when you tell them about your military background and your perception at the table changes with events that take place at the table. i.e., you open up your game and get aggresive, you double up, you slow play a hand, etc., it is important to always be aware of your table image. Another thing to remember, be aware when significant changes take place at the poker table. For example, blinds go up, some one wins a big pot and we got a new chip leader or some one gets knocked out of tourny and we are one more up or closer to the money. Know when some dynamic changes and adjust if neccesary. Felix has my email address, get it from him and email me and i'll help you out on what tells to look for, because once you know what to look for it will start to appear and this is a skill one can improve with time and practice. Good luck!

Hey Bob. Thanks for the insight about the "raise game"! Utilizing it, I was able to save money in spots and make money in others depending on the situation. Can't wait to see what else you've got up your sleeve!

Tunica was great! It gave me time to practice all the pointers Spec Ops Bob gave us in the first column during a very memorable 30 hour session at the tables! I'm in a rush to get back to practice what he said in the second column. Thanks Bob! Your columns rock and I'm taking what you say to heart and in the process am becoming a student of the game.!There's so much more to poker than good fundamentals! Thanks again. |

It's my pleasure Felix! I want to help out with people's poker game anyway I can. Something good or bad that happens in a tournament and you have any questions, let me know. Remember to take notes too. These things will help improve your game and that will put you ahead of most others. Because most people out there aren't looking for ways to improve their game.
