I don't know why I read him so badly. I ought to have realised I was dicing with death with that 3 barreled move. I just thought at the time that in the 3 or 4 pots I was involved with him previously, he played aggressively and pushed me out, and he can't have been that strong every time. I figured he may have got involved with a marginal holding with me seeking to push me out again, so I seized the initiative. Unlucky for me, he had a hand strong enough to call me down to the end.

Plus, as I say, I figured he would be laying down AK (AK spades even), 55 and 77, and Im sure he'd have been more aggressive back at me with better.

A proper pro may well have put him on the hand he had and backed away. I just don't seem to have a proper sense for my opponent's holdings yet. I hope I learn though.
I'm trying to move from being the bullied to someone who can make moves and play proper poker.

It was level 4 of a live game I played recently. Blinds 150 / 300. I have just shy of 10,000 and I am early to act in a full table of 10 players with AQo. I raise 925. I get one caller who I had history with previously (he would enter pots with me and beat me off them by the river).

The flop came 6s, 8s, 9h

I c-bet (I know, I was out of position but I didn't take full cogniscance of this at the time to my shame) - 1,200.

He called.

The turn was another 9.

I bet again, 1,600. He called.

The river was an 8, missing the spade flush draw, leaving two 8s and two 9s on the board.

Action on me, and I have around 4,400 left.

I think briefly and recall that he looked real uncomfortable calling that turn bet. I remember thinking, maybe he's going for that flush draw and missed, or maybe he has 77, possibly a lower pair like 5s. I didn't put him on hitting the board, and I guessed I was probably behind - maybe to AK, but unlikely. I figured he'd re-raise me with jacks or queens after the flop, and re-raise before the flop with KK or AA.

In any event, I thought the only way I could win was to do something I usually give up on by that point, and that's go all in. I certainly didn't want to check down and show my attempted bluff to the table.

I went all in and he squirmed for a bit, eventually calling....with two red tens.

He knocked me out.

I know I went wrong in one way and that was, by the river, I was giving him superb odds to call, due to my bet sizing. But could I have played that hand better? Should I have given up after a failed c-bet after the flop?

I'd really appreciate some help here. Go easy on me though!

thanks
